| An off-duty county Sheriff’s deputy shoots three suspects who were allegedly trying to rob him and a friend in Forest Park. One of the suspects died from his injuries. The shooting happened not far from the Grand Basin near the Art Museum. At this point, investigators say the off-duty deputy involved in the shooting is 42 years old and has been on the force for 16 years.
This all happened around 11:15 p.m. St. Louis police say the deputy was jogging with a 23-year-old female friend in the park after curfew, which started at 10 p.m. Investigators say the pair stopped in the Grand Basin area when a young black man slowly walked past them.
The off-duty deputy became suspicious and put his gun at his side. As the pair went to leave, police say three young black men in their late teens to early 20s confronted them with a gun and said they were going to rob them.
The suspects had on hoodies with bandanas covering their mouths and noses. Police say at that point, the off-duty officer fired several shots, hitting all three suspects. One of the suspects, an 18-year-old black male, was hit three times in the stomach and possibly in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second suspect was shot in the buttocks. He’s at a hospital in critical but stable condition. The third suspect was hit in the neck. He’s also hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
St. Louis City Police Captain Michael Sack says the officer did identify himself. Neither the off-duty deputy nor his friend was hurt. In fact, the suspect never even got off any shots.
The suspect’s gun was recovered at the scene. Police officials have encourage any citizens witnessing groups of suspicious people moving about the city to call police immediately. St. Louis City Police Captain Michael Sack went on to say that many gangs currently within the city operate in such functions where groups of seemingly normal citizens target individuals that appear preoccupied.
